Rectoscopy

Rectoscopy

Rectoscopy is one of the methods that has an important place for early diagnosis of diseases of the last part of the large intestine. Rectoscopy in the human body has a highly effective place in examining the lower part of the digestive system. However, although it is used a lot today, many people do not have detailed information about this extremely important method.

WHAT IS RECTOSCOPY?

Rectoscopy, which is used to examine the lower part of the digestive system, known as recto-sigmoidoscopy in medical language, is actually an endoscopic imaging method. The last part of the digestive system and large intestine is called the rectum. The rectum is 12 to 15 cm long and connects the large intestine to the anus. With rectoscopy, a type of endoscopic imaging method, the rectum can be examined in detail.

In this way, problems in the rectum are easily detected. In this procedure, a piece of tissue can be taken from the area if necessary, in addition to imaging. The existing disease can be diagnosed by pathological examination.

Rectoscopy is an application that allows visual examination of the last part of the large intestine by means of a lighted instrument, and before performing this application, the patient should go to the hospital hungry and the intestines should be examined. When such procedures are to be performed, sedation is applied and thus a painful application is not experienced. The patient is placed on a special examination table and the application is completed within 5 minutes. During this application, a biopsy can be taken for suspicions such as tumours, ulcers, and tumours.

When is Rectoscopy Used?

Rectoscopy is an endoscopic method that allows the rectum, the lower part of the digestive system that helps to store faeces temporarily, to be examined. Rectoscopy is painless and easy to perform thanks to an anaesthetic procedure. This procedure is achieved with the help of a drug that provides intravenous sedation.

Thanks to rectoscopy, which is used in the treatment and diagnosis of different diseases, detailed information such as epithelial cell colour, brightness, tone and moisture is obtained. In addition, if the lesions in the rectum are suspected, a piece is taken and examined pathologically. In this way, with the definitive diagnosis, the general condition of the patient and the treatment method to be applied can be determined much better.

Rectoscopy is used in the diagnosis of a large number of diseases due to its high diagnostic feature and being an easy-to-apply method on behalf of the patient. Conditions requiring rectoscopy are as follows;

  • Burning and pain in the anus,
  • Breech swelling,
  • Intestinal inflammation,
  • Persistent itching and crack formation in the anus area,
  • Any bleeding and suspected tumours,
  • Constipation problems,
  • Intestinal diseases such as ulcerative colon,
  • Suspected colon cancer,

RECTOSCOPY APPLICATION PURPOSES

Rectoscopy can be applied in all types of rectal bleeding, tumour suspicions, examination of haemorrhoids, inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis, pain in the rectal area, suspicion of colon cancer. The patient does not feel any discomfort during rectoscopy.
