Breast Aesthetics Operations

Breast aesthetics encompasses a range of surgical procedures that aim to improve or restore the appearance, shape and symmetry of the breasts. The main reasons why people choose these surgeries include: dissatisfaction with breast size or shape, correcting asymmetry, restoring volume lost due to aging, pregnancy or weight fluctuations, reconstructing the breast after mastectomy or trauma.

These surgeries, such as augmentation, lift, reduction or fat transfer, often contribute to improved self-confidence and body image, and help individuals feel more comfortable and in line with their aesthetic goals. The most commonly performed aesthetic breast procedures are:

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to increase the size, shape, or fullness of the breasts. The surgery is usually performed using saline or silicone breast implants that are placed under the breast tissue or chest muscles. The goal of breast augmentation is to improve the symmetry, contour, or overall appearance of the breasts, usually for cosmetic reasons or to replace volume lost due to pregnancy, weight loss, or aging. It can also be used in reconstructive surgery to reconstruct the breast after a mastectomy or injury.

What implant shapes and sizes are used in breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation offers a variety of implant (silicone) options in both shape and size to help you achieve the look you want:

Implant Shapes:

  • Round Implants: These are the most common shape and provide a fuller, more lifted appearance, especially in the upper part of the breast. Round implants are symmetrical, so they maintain their shape regardless of position. They provide a more defined cleavage.
  • Drop (Anatomical) Implants:Shaped to mimic the natural contours of the breast, drop implants have more volume at the bottom and taper toward the top. This provides a slimmer, more natural appearance.

Implant Sizes:

Implant sizes are measured in cubic centimeters (cc) and typically range from 150 cc to 800 cc. The size chosen depends on your anatomy, personal goals, and your surgeon’s recommendation during your consultation. Factors such as your chest width, breast tissue, and skin elasticity are taken into consideration to determine the best size for your body.

When choosing both shape and size, it is important to balance your aesthetic desires with what suits your anatomy to achieve a beautiful, natural-looking result. Your surgeon will guide you through the options to help you choose the implant shape and size that best suits your body and goals.

What techniques are used for breast augmentation?

When it comes to breast augmentation, there are two basic placement techniques for implants:

  • Submuscular
  • Supramuscular

Each option offers different benefits, and the best choice depends on your anatomy, lifestyle, and desired outcome.

Submuscular placement:In this technique, the implant is placed partially or completely under the pectoral muscle. This placement provides a more natural appearance, especially for those with less natural breast tissue.

Supramuscular placement:In this case, the implant is placed directly behind the breast tissue but above the pectoral muscle. This technique usually involves a quicker recovery process and can be a good option for patients who have more natural breast tissue to cover the implant.

What ingredients are used in breast implants?

Here are some of the ingredients used in implant manufacturing:

Silicone breast implants:A popular option for breast augmentation. These implants are filled with a silicone gel that closely mimics the feel of natural breast tissue, making them the best choice for patients who want a softer, more natural-looking result.

Saline implants: Filled with a sterile saltwater solution. They are generally an effective option, especially for those who prefer the immediate detection of rupture and the reassurance of the natural absorption of the saltwater solution.

Gummy Bear breast implants: Also known as cohesive gel implants, they are a type of silicone implant that offers a firmer, more stable form than traditional silicone implants. They are called “Gummy Bear” implants because the silicone gel inside is thicker and more cohesive, meaning it has the consistency of gummy candy. Even if the implant’s coating breaks, the gel inside it will retain its shape.

Breast augmentation with fat transfer: a natural alternative to traditional breast implants that uses your body fat to enhance the size and shape of your breasts. Also known as autologous fat grafting, this procedure involves taking fat from other areas of your body, such as your abdomen, thighs or flanks, through liposuction, then purifying the fat and injecting it into your breast.

Is a breast lift needed during breast augmentation?

This is the first question to ask when considering breast augmentation. Your doctor will evaluate your breast tissue, breast skin, and nipple position to help you decide whether breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast augmentation combined with breast lift is best. The ideal breast augmentation candidate is a patient who wants more breast volume.

If you are happy with the volume of your breast tissue when you are wearing a bra, but unhappy with the sagging appearance when you are naked, then a breast lift is best. Generally, if the nipple position is below the breast crease when you stand in front of a mirror and you want larger breasts, you may need a lift procedure with implants.

What is breast implant revision? In what cases is it performed?

Breast revision surgery is most commonly performed to replace ruptured original implants, increase implant size, or address concerns such as asymmetry. Implants typically last up to 20 years. However, there are a few reasons why they may need to be replaced sooner:

Implants causing pain or discomfort, rupture, moving below the breast crease, moving/rotating, changing shape, advanced capsular contracture (overgrowth of dense, hard tissue around the implant), dissatisfaction with breast size.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to lift and reshape the breasts to achieve a more youthful breast appearance. This procedure is often preferred by women who have sagging or drooping breasts due to factors such as aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, or genetics.

During a breast lift procedure, excess skin is removed, breast tissue is reshaped, and lifted to create a firmer, more aesthetically pleasing breast contour. The nipple and areola may also be placed higher on the breast mound for a more proportionate appearance. In some cases, breast implants may be used in conjunction with a breast lift to increase volume and fullness.

A breast lift is usually performed under general anesthesia and can vary in complexity depending on the degree of sagging and the desired outcome. Recovery time varies from person to person, but there is usually some discomfort, swelling, and bruising for several weeks after surgery. Most breast lift patients can return to normal activities within two weeks, but strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for longer periods of time.

The breast lift technique may vary depending on your anatomy, your wishes, and your surgeon. The main types of breast lift incisions are:

  • Crescent breast lift
  • Periareolar breast lift
  • Lollipop breast lift
  • Anchor breast lift

Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery involves removing skin and tissue from the breast, then reshaping and lifting the breast to create a smaller, more proportionate size.

If your breasts are causing neck, shoulder, back pain, limiting your mobility and activities, making it difficult to breathe due to the weight, causing skin irritation, you are unhappy with the appearance of your breast area, and you have difficulty finding clothes that fit, you may benefit from breast reduction surgery.

Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

In men, obesity can cause significant fat deposits in the chest, or gynecomastia (an increase in the amount of mammary gland tissue in boys or adults). These conditions can be worsened by certain medications and activities that can stimulate the development of this gland tissue.

If a person still has large breast tissue after waiting for gynecomastia to go away on its own or taking medications, surgery may be an option. There are generally two types of gynecomastia surgery options:

Liposuction: This surgery removes breast fat while leaving breast tissue.

Mastectomy This type of surgery removes the mammary gland tissue. Liposuction and mastectomy are combined when necessary.
