Foot Care During Pregnancy
During pregnancy, it is common for women to experience foot problems they have never encountered before. Overpronation (flat feet) and edema (swelling of the feet) often develop during pregnancy. Natural weight gain puts additional pressure on the knees and ankles, which can lead to heel pain, arch pain, and ball of the foot pain. But foot pain and discomfort can be treated and prevented during pregnancy with some simple shoe adjustments and regular care.
It is not uncommon for a woman to change shoe size several times throughout pregnancy, so it is important to adjust shoes accordingly. Don’t squeeze your swollen feet into shoes that are too small or lack cushioning and support. Going up an extra size and adding orthotic insoles to shoes keeps feet comfortable and supported. If you continue to wear your pre-pregnancy shoes, you run the risk of developing bunions and heel pain. Overpronation and decreased balance during pregnancy can be treated with orthotic insoles, which can greatly reduce any pain and discomfort. Wearing socks that promote circulation will also help reduce swelling and get rid of foot problems.
Edema usually occurs in the later months of pregnancy when the body retains water and causes swelling. You can reduce the effects of edema by reducing your salt intake, elevating your feet as much as possible, and taking a bath to reduce swelling. Wearing compression socks also helps improve circulation, which reduces swelling and relieves foot pain.
